Professor Dr Hit Kishore Goswami

Retired Professor of Genetics, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, India

Professor Dr Hit Kishore Goswami was born on 1 June 1942 in Datia, Madhya Pradesh, India. He completed his M.Sc. in Botany from Saugor University in 1963 and earned his Ph.D. in Botany (Genetics) in 1970. After teaching in schools and colleges, he joined the University of Bhopal on 1 May 1976.

He founded the Department of Genetics and retired in 2004 as Professor of Genetics from Barkatullah University, Bhopal. Internationally known as a distinguished teacher, Professor Goswami’s research spans plant morphology, anatomy, biodiversity conservation genetics, population cytogenetics, physical anthropology, medical and evolutionary genetics, and human twin studies.

He discovered seven new plant species and several human syndromes. Since 1986 he has proposed that chromatin dots arising from chromatin attenuation may serve as markers of chromosomal change. With a wide academic career, he has published around 250 research papers.

Abstract

This book offers a detailed and engaging journey through the major evolutionary milestones that shaped life on Earth. It begins with the aquatic origin of life and introduces the molecular mechanisms that guided early biological development. The chapters gradually expand into the evolution of eukaryotic chromosomes and the fundamental structure of genetic material, helping readers build a solid understanding of how genomes emerged and diversified. The discussion on gene pools and early evolutionary phases provides a smooth transition into broader genomic evolution. The book also explores the dynamics of replication, randomness in genetic processes, and the role chromosomes play in shaping evolutionary strategies. Special attention is given to how different genomes can coexist and adapt within changing environments. Further chapters examine speciation, natural selection, and hybridization as powerful forces in nature. The text concludes with insights into chromosomal aberrations, DNA sequence changes, and ecological genetics, highlighting how adaptive strategies influence survival and biodiversity. Supported by a glossary, references, and an index, this book serves as a valuable resource for students, educators, and anyone interested in evolutionary biology, genetics, and the molecular foundations of life.
