Abstract
Chitin is the second most abundant polysaccharide next to cellulose and found in the exoskeleton of shellfish, crab, shrimp, insects and fungi. Chitosan the deacetylated product of chitin possesses a unique cationic nature relative to other neutral or negatively charged polysaccharides. Chitosan and chitosan blended with other polymers and their nanocomposite films showed interesting physico chemical properties and anti-bacterial properties and hence can be used as packaging materials which will help the environment to be remain healthy and clean. The Chitosan based nanocomposite organic interaction can be used to control the release of active ingredients (drugs) with improved therapeutic properties. Till now, there is no formulation available in the market containing chitosan based nanocomposite as drug carrier. Therefore, there is a lot of scope for the use of clay nanocomposite as drug delivery carrier in the field of pharmaceutics.
